RIOT IN PARIS:
It’s no secret that I was vehemently anti-twitter for years. The whole thing just felt like a contrived means of publicly patting yourself of the back for waking up (while embracing the fact that you don’t even have to get out of bed in order to do so). After much discussion (I give most of the credit to DA Wallach) I realized that perhaps I had been focusing exclusively on the bad and missing out on the very real opportunity to connect with people in ways I hadn’t before, and to experience art I wouldn’t have otherwise. So it was that I heard Riot In Paris. They randomly tweeted me, I followed the link, and my curiosity was rewarded with a band so sympatico with my taste as to feel like the answer to a pop-culture prayer. Backstage in New York I was struck with how genuinely sharp these cats were: They know their stuff from music theory to guitar settings, but onstage all that intellect and preparation gave way to pure enjoyable music. That’s the way to do it.
